The people of Tansen
and Palpa represent a diverse range of Nepal's cultural and ethnic groups.
The two dominating groups in this middle hill region are the Newar and
Magar people.
Magars
Comprising
about 60% of the population of Tansen, the main ethnic group of Palpa
is "Magar". Traditionally hill farmers inhabiting the lower
slopes, they are also known for their fighting abilities and many have
been recruited into Gurkha regiments of the British and Indian armies.
They have their own language though most Magars understand Nepali. Singing,
dancing, brewing rakshi (local alcohol) and drinking are the most essential
parts of this culture.
Newars
Newar is the second major ethnic group of Tansen. Their main occupation
is business but they are also famous for Nepalese arts and crafts. Originally
from the Kathmandu valley, the Newars followed their trade and business
and established marketplaces in strategically important areas like crossroads
of trading routes or administration headquarters. Both of these applied
to Tansen. The language of this ethnic group, 'Newari', is spoken by 2.5%
of the total population of Palpa. The Newars are further subdivided into
different castes according to their occupation. Many festivals are celebrated
by this group.
